What to expect during your first visit...

Dr. Sergei Shirman, DMD, strives to ensure each patient feels at home at our dental practice. A trip to the dentist doesn’t have to cause anxiety. At Dental Wellness of Charlotte, we have a completely digital dental office. This means that you will be able to fill out all appropriate paperwork via a secure link prior to arriving at the office. Not to worry, if you need help utilizing our paperless system, our patient representatives are here to help when you arrive at your appointment.

If this is your first visit, you will meet with your dentist to talk about your medical history. If you have any oral health worries or fears, you can feel comfortable sharing them with him or her—your comfort is most important, so we encourage you to ask questions. Next, your dentist will likely examine your teeth, gums, and mouth, and take x-rays and/or panoramic radiographs. Panoramic radiographs help your dentist view unerupted or impacted teeth, as well as sinus conditions, and can detect lesions or fractures in the jaw.

Our team wants you to be completely comfortable with all your dental care; therefore, we encourage you to ask any questions you may have during your visit regarding your dental care plan.

Your dentist will discuss the comprehensive dental treatment plan he or she developed specifically for you. While your dentist will provide the expert guidance you deserve, your questions are always welcome and you always have the final say in your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

I am unsatisfied with the appearance of my front teeth. Can you help?

Dr. Shirman offers a number of cosmetic treatments for Matthews, NC and Greater Charlotte Area patients. The one that is right for you depends on your smile, budget, and your personal goals.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Many patients are eligible for dental implants. If your tooth loss is recent and you are in good oral and overall health, chances are good that you are, too. Schedule an appointment to find out for sure.

What kind of sedation do you offer?

For patients who need a little help relaxing at the dentist, we offer nitrous oxide sedation. Also known as laughing gas, it helps you to feel comfortable (and maybe even happy!) during your dental treatment.

Do root canals hurt?

There’s no doubt about the fact that root canals have a reputation of being extremely painful, but the truth is they’re nothing to fear from the treatment thanks to options in anesthesia and sedation. The most pain you are likely to feel is in the lead up to the treatment, while your tooth is still infected and aching.

Do you offer adult braces?

Dental Wellness of Charlotte is pleased to offer two options in orthodontic treatment: traditional metal braces and Invisalign, clear braces for adults and children. Both use the same orthodontic principles to realign teeth, but Invisalign does so without visible hardware.

Can adults get dental sealants too?

Yes! While we usually recommend dental sealants for children, who especially benefit from cavity prevention, dental sealants can provide needed help for adults who are at a higher risk of tooth decay, too.

How can I prevent gum disease?

Gum disease is easily prevented with regular dental hygiene at home, including brushing for two minutes, at least twice a day (though after each meal is better) and flossing daily. In addition to good hygiene, visiting your dentist for a checkup and cleaning every six months is important for keeping gum disease at bay.
